Stanley Wany est un artiste multidisciplinaire dont le travail consiste à extirper l’histoire de ses ancêtres afrodescendants en revisitant les récits construits par les archives coloniales. Sa pratique débute par l'exploration, à titre d’éditeur et de créateur de romans graphiques expérimentaux, de la non linéarité de la narration et de la représentation de l'inconscient. Après une résidence en Finlande, son intérêt envers l’historicité des narratifs propres à la culture populaire donne lieu à une production d'œuvres sur papier. Par la suite, parallèlement à la présentation de sa première exposition à la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa, il poursuit une maîtrise en arts visuels et médiatiques à l’UQAM. Sa recherche s’articulant autour de la remémoration de traumatismes familiaux, il retrace alors les impacts de la subjugation coloniale sur son identité. Actuellement, sa pratique se tourne vers les contributions de sa famille et, plus globalement, des cultures africaines afin de forger un récit valorisant les legs et contributions des personnes afrodescendantes au sein de l'Histoire et de la Culture. Ces derniers sont ainsi encodés dans une production ayant recours à des matériaux issus du colonialisme (café, coton, sucre, entre autres), servant aussi d’interface entre l’artiste et le public incitant au dialogue.

Stanley Wany a présenté des expositions solos à Oboro (Montréal), ELLEPHANT, à la Galerie de l’UQAM, au Plug In Contemporary Art Institute (Winnipeg), BAND Gallery (Toronto), à la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa, le Centre d’exposition l’Imagier (Gatineau) et à la Perc Tucker Regional Gallery (Australie). Il a également participé à des expositions de groupe à la Parsons School of Design (New York), avec la Ville de Montréal, à la galerie Art Mûr, à Âjagemô (Conseil des arts du Canada), à la Ville d’Ottawa, au Sénat du Parlement canadien et au festival North by Northwest. Il a complété une maîtrise à l'UQAM en 2024 ainsi qu'une résidence de recherche-création à l'International Studio and Curatorial Program à Brooklyn, et plus récemment, une résidence chez Art Omi (État de New York) à l’été 2026. D’autre part, il a participé à de nombreux événements culturels dont la foire 1-54 (Marrakech), Plural (Montréal), Art Toronto, le congrès du Haitian Studies Association, le Festival de la bande dessinée d’Angoulême et le Helsinki Comics Festival. Cinq publications sont incluses à son actif, dont Helem (2021, Conundrum Press), Inwards (2020, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery), Séquences, Dreamcave et Agalma (2015, 2016 et 2017, Éditions Trip), en plus de nombreuses contributions à des ouvrages collectifs. Il est récipiendaire de diverses bourses en provenance de la Fondation de la famille Claudine et Stephen Bronfman (Fondation de l’UQAM), du Conseil des arts du Canada, du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec et du Groupe de recherche et de réflexion CIÉCO. Ses œuvres se retrouvent dans les collections suivantes : Musée des beaux-arts du Canada ; Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal ; Majudia Collection ; Banque d’art du Canada ; Banque TD ; Galerie d’art d’Ottawa ; Perc Tucker Regional Gallery (Townsville, Australie) ; Ville d’Ottawa ; William Marsh Rice University (Houston, Texas) ; et des collections privées au Canada et à l’étranger.

Stanley Wany is a multidisciplinary artist whose work seeks to unearth the history of his Afro-descendant ancestors by revisiting narratives constructed by colonial archives. His practice began with an exploration—as a publisher and creator of experimental graphic novels—of non-linear storytelling and the representation of the unconscious. Following a residency in Finland, his interest in the historicity of popular culture narratives led to the creation of works on paper. Subsequently, alongside his first exhibition at the Ottawa Art Gallery, he pursued a master’s degree in visual and media arts at UQAM. Centering his research on the recollection of family trauma, he traces the impact of colonial subjugation on his own identity. Currently, his practice focuses on the contributions of his family and, more broadly, African cultures, aiming to forge a narrative that highlights the legacies and contributions of Afro-descendant people to history and culture. These elements are encoded in works utilizing materials associated with colonialism—such as coffee, cotton, and sugar—which also serve as an interface between the artist and the public, fostering dialogue.

Stanley Wany has held solo exhibitions at Oboro (Montreal), ELLEPHANT, Galerie de l’UQAM, Plug In Contemporary Art Institute (Winnipeg), BAND Gallery (Toronto), the Ottawa Art Gallery, Centre d’exposition l’Imagier (Gatineau), and the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery (Australia). His body of work includes five publications—Helem (2021, Conundrum Press), Inwards (2020, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery), and Séquences, Dreamcave, and Agalma (2015, 2016, and 2017, Éditions Trip)—in addition to numerous contributions to collective works. He is the recipient of various grants from the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation (UQAM Foundation), the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the CIÉCO research and reflection group. His works are held in the following collections: the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Majudia Collection, the Canada Council Art Bank, TD Bank, and the Ottawa Art Gallery. Perc Tucker Regional Gallery (Townsville, Australia); City of Ottawa; William Marsh Rice University (Houston, Texas); and private collections in Canada and abroad.
